How to Use Maarc HF Gel Porcelain Etchant — Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 – Prepare & Isolate the Area Before applying the porcelain etchant, ensure the working area is completely isolated using rubber dam or cotton rolls. Protect adjacent soft tissues, gingiva, and unrestored tooth surfaces from accidental contact with the hydrofluoric acid gel. Apply petroleum jelly or protective barrier to surrounding tissues if required.
Step 2 – Clean & Dry the Porcelain Surface Thoroughly clean the porcelain or ceramic restoration surface with a pumice slurry or alcohol wipe to remove any contaminants, saliva, or residues. Rinse well and dry completely with oil-free compressed air before etching. A clean, dry surface is essential for uniform etching and maximum bonding effectiveness.
Step 3 – Load the Applicator Attach one of the provided disposable applicator tips onto the Maarc HF Gel syringe. Dispense a small amount of gel to prime the tip before clinical application.
Step 4 – Apply Maarc HF Gel Evenly Apply the 9.6% HF porcelain etchant gel evenly across the entire bonding surface of the ceramic restoration using the applicator tip. The gel's controlled viscosity ensures it stays precisely in the application zone without running or spreading. The tinted colouring agent allows easy visual confirmation of complete and uniform coverage.
Step 5 – Allow Etching Time Leave the HF gel undisturbed on the porcelain surface for the recommended etching time — typically 60 to 90 seconds depending on the type and thickness of the ceramic. Refer to the specific porcelain manufacturer's guidelines for optimal etching duration. Avoid over-etching as this may weaken the ceramic surface.
Step 6 – Rinse Thoroughly After the etching time is complete, rinse the porcelain surface thoroughly with a strong water spray for a minimum of 30–60 seconds to remove all traces of the hydrofluoric acid gel. Ensure no residual gel remains on the restoration or surrounding tissues. Collect the rinse water carefully as HF is a hazardous substance.
Step 7 – Dry the Surface Dry the etched porcelain surface completely using clean, oil-free compressed air. The properly etched surface will appear white and chalky — this confirms successful micro-roughening of the ceramic surface.
Step 8 – Apply Silane Coupling Agent Immediately apply a silane coupling agent to the etched porcelain surface as per your bonding protocol. Silane enhances the chemical adhesion between the ceramic surface and the resin cement for a durable, long-lasting bond.
Step 9 – Proceed with Bonding Apply your preferred adhesive system and resin cement to bond the ceramic restoration to the tooth preparation following standard clinical adhesive protocol. Light cure or dual cure as per the resin cement manufacturer's instructions.
Step 10 – Discard Applicator Tip Dispose of the used applicator tip safely after each use. Never reuse applicator tips as cross-contamination may affect the gel's performance and clinical safety.
⚠️ Important Safety Warnings:
- Hydrofluoric acid is highly corrosive — handle with extreme caution at all times
- Wear protective gloves, eyewear, and mask during all handling and application steps
- Avoid any contact with skin, eyes, oral soft tissues, or mucous membranes — HF acid causes severe burns that may not be immediately painful
- In case of skin or eye contact, rinse immediately with copious amounts of water and seek immediate medical attention
- For professional dental use only — to be used by qualified dental practitioners
- Keep out of reach of children
- Store at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight
