What does HF acid do to ceramic?

Selectively etches the glassy ceramic matrix creating a microporous surface for mechanical interlocking with resin cement.
Is it safe?

Corrosive — use gloves and eye protection. Avoid intraoral use without rubber dam isolation.
Etching time?

60–90 seconds for feldspathic; 60 seconds for leucite-reinforced. Do not use on zirconia.
Must I use silane after?

Yes — silane coupling agent must be applied after HF etching for chemical bonding.
Works on zirconia?

No — use air abrasion with silane for zirconia bonding.
